About Me 

I am Heather Barclay, Sole Proprietor of Thrift Bookkeeping and a member of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers. Thrift offers a professional bookkeeping and payroll service for small businesses, partnerships and charities. The ICB licences and regulates my practice, and I am bound by their professional ethics and standards. 

I trained using Sage, am a Certified Advisor for Xero and Xero Payroll,  a QuickBooks Certified Pro Advisor and a FreeAgent Partner and Payroll Practitioner. In addition to my bookkeeping qualifications, I have studied Business Management, and in 2001 graduated from Strathclyde Graduate Business School as a Master of Business Administration (MBA). 

My career has been quite varied, and I had some adventures in business, the charity sector and local government on my journey from Zookeeper to Bookkeeper. I love finding out about what makes a business tick, and helping people grow their enterprise using sound financial records to inform their decision making.  

Company overview

Thrift Bookkeeping was founded in May 2018. The name "Thrift" was inspired by a mixture of the traditional Scottish value of careful money management, and by the hardy coastal wildflower of the same name, which was in bloom as I was looking for inspiration to name my business. 

I provide a freelance service for businesses who need support with their bookkeeping or payroll. The service is tailored to the individual needs of each organisation. This can be a regular weekly or monthly service, support with VAT returns, setting up Cloud accounting software or short-term clean up work to restore order to your accounts. I can also produce Annual Financial Statements for Sole Traders, Partnerships and Not For Profit organisations, either as an annual service or part of regular bookkeeping. Payroll administration can be provided either as an integral part of a bookkeeping package or as a stand-alone service. I can also supply appropriate Cloud software for maintaining your accounts, or advise on what is most appropriate to your business needs. 

In addition to general bookkeeping, I can also draw on many years of experience to support my clients in setting up or developing their businesses.
